Onboarding, feature guides, and reference for the desktop app — from your first project to exporting a finished book.
Getting Started
Interface & Navigation
- Application interface Tour of the Writer Studio workspace: toolbar, Activity Bar, side panels, editor area with tabs and splits, status bar, focus mode, and the command palette.
- Projects A project is a folder on your disk. It holds all the book, character, and metadata files. No cloud database — everything sits in your file system.
Writing
- Books A single project can contain multiple books — convenient for series or short story collections. Each book has its own structure (acts, chapters, scenes) and…
- Book structure The Explorer panel shows the hierarchy of your book and serves as the main navigation tool. It opens on the left and is toggled with a toolbar button.
- Editor Writer Studio uses a TipTap editor with Markdown support. The editor opens when you click an item in the Explorer.
- Proofreading Proofreading checks spelling, grammar, punctuation, style, and typography directly in the editor as you type. Russian and English are supported…
- Characters The Characters panel is available via the icon in the activity bar. Characters are tied to a specific book. If a project has multiple books, each has its own…
- Metadata The Properties panel opens when you click the icon on the right side of the interface. The panel's content depends on the item selected in the Explorer.
- Search and Tags The search panel opens from the activity bar (magnifier icon). Search runs full-text across the current book.
AI Tools
- AI Copilot AI Copilot is a chat with your book's context. Ask questions, request new or revised scenes, discuss structure — the AI knows which book you're working on.
- Knowledge Base Knowledge Base — the Knowledge tab in the AI Copilot panel. It stores summaries of structural elements and extracted facts, fed automatically into chat context.
- Autocomplete Autocomplete suggests text continuations right in the editor — gray ghost text after the cursor. The feature is off by default and is enabled manually.
- AI Structure Generation Structure generation is a wizard that builds a book from scratch — the AI creates the full hierarchy of acts, chapters, scenes, plus characters and metadata.
Export, Import & Publishing
- Export Writer Studio lets you export your book in several formats for publishing, printing, or sending to an editor.
- Import Writer Studio can import manuscripts from popular formats. The result is a new book in the current project with a ready-made chapter structure.
- Publish a book Create a link that lets readers read your book online. You control access and can revoke it at any time.
Account & Feedback
- Account Writer Studio runs locally and doesn't require registration. An account is only needed for cloud features — publishing and sync. All your files stay on disk regardless of sign-in state.
- Feedback Send a bug report, suggestion, or support request directly from Writer Studio — no need to visit the website or open your email client.
Reference
- Statistics The statistics panel helps you track writing progress: today's progress, your streak, a weekly overview, and overall book stats.
- Data safety Writer Studio protects your work with four independent mechanisms. Use them together for reliable protection.
- Settings Open settings from the Writer Studio -> Settings menu (Cmd+,).
