Move a project with cloud backup

Cloud backup keeps a complete Backup of your project on Authr's server. You turn it on for each project in Settings. Uploads need an account, an active Authr Plus subscription, and an internet connection.

Cloud backup is not sync. Changes do not travel between computers by themselves. Back up on one computer, then restore on the other. Repeat this each time you change computers. If the old computer stops working, you can recover only work in a Backup already uploaded.

Turn on cloud backup and upload

  1. Open your project. Sign in to the account you use on both computers.
  2. Open File → Settings... → Backup. Under Cloud, turn on Cloud Backup for this project. The switch stays off if the subscription check fails; check the reason and use Retry.
  3. Close Settings. Open File → Restore Project.... In Restore project, choose From a backup, then Create Backup. Writer Studio creates a local Backup first, then uploads it separately.
  4. Return to Settings... → Backup. Use Retry to refresh Last upload for this project. Wait for a new upload time before you leave this computer. Creating a local Backup alone does not confirm an upload.

Move to a computer you already use

Use this case when the second computer already has Writer Studio and you use the same account there.

With a project open, Restore project → From a backup lists that project's cloud Backups beside its local ones. An entry that also exists on this computer restores from the local copy. An entry held only in the cloud restores over the open project: choose its restore button. Writer Studio first downloads and checks the copy; Cancel download or Escape stops it. Then confirm Restore. Writer Studio keeps a Before restore Backup of the current project, then restores. To restore into a new folder instead, close the project and follow the next section.

Recover on a new computer

Use these steps after losing the old computer, or whenever you need a cloud copy in a new folder.

  1. Open Writer Studio. On a new computer, install it first. Sign in to the same account. Keep no project open.
  2. Open File → Restore Project.... Backups on this computer comes first, then Cloud Backups. The cloud section lists every cloud Backup of your account, in the order supplied by the service.
  3. Choose a cloud Backup by project name, date, and time. This computer and Another computer show where a copy came from. No label means the source is unknown.
  4. Under Choose where to restore, choose Location and enter Project folder name. Use a new folder name. If that folder already exists, choose another name or location.
  5. Choose Restore. Writer Studio downloads and checks the copy first, then restores it. Cancel works during download, checking, and restore. The project opens when the restore finishes. Cloud backup is off for this restored project on this computer until you turn it on.

Delete a cloud Backup

Delete a cloud copy you no longer need, for example when cloud storage is full. Deleting does not need Authr Plus.

  1. Sign in. Open File → Restore Project.... With a project open, choose From a backup. With no project open, use Cloud Backups.
  2. On the cloud entry, choose the delete button. Its name is Delete cloud Backup, followed by the Backup ID and date. Only an entry with a cloud copy has it.
  3. In Delete Cloud Backup, check the Backup ID, date, and project that the dialog names.
  4. Choose Delete Permanently, or choose Cancel to keep the copy. Cancel is the default.

Authr keeps no other copy, so a deleted cloud Backup cannot be brought back. Backups on this computer stay as they are. If an entry also exists on this computer, only its cloud copy is deleted. After the delete, the list is read again from the service. If the delete does not finish, the list says that the copy may still be in the cloud.

Limits

  • A Backup carries your text, Book Wiki, media, Version History, and Trash. Device settings and the record of writing days used for your streak stay on the original computer.
  • The server keeps only the newest cloud Backups of each project. For a project with cloud backup on, Restore project → From a backup shows Cloud Backups kept for this project and Stored now beside Create Backup. Settings shows the same limit: in Settings... → Backup → Cloud, expand Limits reported by the platform and read Backups kept per project. Once that limit is reached, Project Restore says The next upload removes the oldest cloud Backup., and each new upload removes the oldest copy. Repeated manual uploads in one day can remove older copies.
  • Upload failed: Restore project → From a backup names the Backup that did not upload and says why. When Authr Plus is inactive, it offers View Authr Plus.
  • Offline or service unavailable: the cloud section shows the reason and Retry. Check your connection and retry. Backups on this computer still works.
  • Signed out, or your sign-in has expired: the cloud section shows only a sign-in hint. Sign in to see your copies. If this happens while a delete is running, the hint also says whether the copy is still in the cloud. Sign in and delete it again.
  • Copy cannot be verified: the restore stops and changes nothing. Choose another Backup.
  • Authr Plus ends: no new uploads. Existing cloud Backups stay listed and restorable after sign-in.
